8th International WATCHDOCS Festival - one of the biggest international festivals presenting human rights in films is underway in Warsaw. 90 documentaries from Poland, Belarus, China, Israel, Russia and the United States are shown during the ten day event organized by the Helsinki Human Rights Foundation in Warsaw.
There are two competition sections and several retrospectives in the program. One includes films by Errol Morris, a renowned American documentary filmmaker, the winner of the Silver Bear Award at this year's Berlin Film Festival as well as an Oscar in 2004 for his documentary "Fog of War". Two other retrospectives are particularly crucial from Poland's perspective - says Maciej Nowicki, the festival's director. One of them "Change happened here" is devoted to Polish social documentaries after 1989. The other "Images of a democratic breakthrough" is a look at documentaries from communist Poland and eastern Germany.
