Slav world's greatest Renaissance poet

Long before many other Slav languages developed their literature, Poland already boasted a couple of notable poets. One was Jan Kochanowski, who lived and worked in the 16th century, during what came tio be known as the golden age of Polish culture.
Czeslaw Milosz Dies at 93

We pay tribute to one of Poland's best known writers who has died in Krakow. Czeslaw Milosz was a novelist, poet and literary critic, who defected to the West in the 1950's. His writings, including the classic 'Captive Mind', a brilliant analysis of totalitarianism, were almost completely unknown in Poland when he won the 1980 Nobel prize in literature.
Joseph Conrad's African Journey

The literary season continues with a story about Joseph Conrad, the Polish-born British novelist who's still widely read and admired around the world. This novelist and short-story writer, a dreamer, adventurer, and gentleman, in his famous preface to THE NIGGER OF THE 'NARCISSUS' (1897 crystallized his often quoted goal as a writer: "My task which I am trying to achieve is, by the power of the written word, to make you hear, to make you fell - it is, above all, to make you see. That - and no more, and it is everything." Among Conrad's most popular works are LORD JIM (1900) and HEART OF DARKNESS (1902).

One of the most chilling works about the abortive Warsaw Rising againsn, the Nazis in 1944 is 'Kanal' by Jerzy Stefan Stawinski. It's the story of a desperate evacuation effort from a district that had fallen to the Nazis by a group of insurgents, using a system of underground sewers. The word 'kanal' in Polish means 'sewer'. The story was made into the classic 1950s film by Andrzej Wajda.
