On the Polish economy, RZECZPOSPOLITA writes that at long last, after repeated calls from the employers, the government has come up with a realistic assessment of the situation and announced a plan for averting a total crisis. Spending cuts are inevitable but Poland has the opportunity to creatively come up with the finances as the government is in a better situation than most other countries in the world. RZECZPOSPOLITA welcomes the government decision to support those seeking credit and not those giving it, that is, the banks.

DZIENNIK frontpages Prime Minister Tusk’s announcement that 2009 is going to be a critical year for Poland. The daily quotes opposition politicians as saying that what the government is up to is an update of the budget without a formal parliamentary procedure.

In its editorial, DZIENNIK writes that the government has now to focus on what it is not capable of achieving. This is why the Prime Minister started to use such adjectives as ‘critical’ and ‘dramatic’, the words he seemed not to know until yesterday.

GAZETA WYBORCZA reports on its front page that Mark Brzeziński, the son of Zbigniew Brzezinski, the former US presidential security adviser, is a serious candidate for the post of US ambassador in Warsaw. Forty-three-year-old Mark Brzezinski is a lawyer and expert in international affairs. He held a high-ranking position in the National Security Council in 1999-2001 during the Clinton administration and in later years contributed to major American dailies. Presenting his profile, GAZETA WYBORCZA says that he is fluent in Polish and that his recent wedding with Natalia Lopatniuk at the National Museum for Women in the Arts was the talk of the town in Washington. His brother and best man at the wedding, Ian, is – unlike Mark – a staunch supporter of the Republican candidate in the presidential election. Both brothers hold high Polish state distinctions – Officers’ Crosses of the Order of Merit.

The tabloid FAKT reports on the comments from the Irish Environmental Minister, Sammy Wilson, who apparently does not want any more Poles in the country. He claims that the Irish simply no longer want anything to do with employing Poles – there aren’t enough jobs due to the crisis. The tabloid expresses its shock at such a sentiment because not long ago the Irish were happy to welcome Polish immigrants and offer jobs to them. FAKT says that Sammy Wilson must have forgotten how much they have contributed to his country’s development.

‘The Polish team goes on to fight for medals’, ‘A miracle in Croatia’ and ‘A horror with a happy end’ – these are some of the front-page headlines in reports on the fabulous performance of the national handball team at the world championships in Croatia. The winning goal in a crucial game against Norway was scored five seconds from the final whistle. Setting the scene for Friday’s game against Croatia for a place in the finals, GAZETA WYBORCZA notes that handball is a national sport in that country.
