‘Euro – a solution to the crisis’ is the headline in RZECZPOSPOLITA’s report on the prime minister’s address in Parliament on the government measures to lessen the impact of the economic crisis. In the prime minister’s view, an all-party consensus on the timetable of euro adoption is crucial for standing up to the challenges with other EU countries.
In an editorial, RZECZPOSPOLITA admits that entering the eurozone, even though far more difficult now that even a year ago, is of great importance. The daily stresses, however, that the euro drive cannot be the main instrument of counteracting the crisis. Poland has to put EU funds to the best possible use and remove all barriers hampering entrepreneurship.
DZIENNIK has mixed feelings about the Prime Minister’s speech. The government’s resolve to help those who have lost work and are unable to repay their mortgage sounds catchy, but the daily wonders if there is realistic ground to translate such plans into practice.
GAZETA WYBORCZA praises Prime Minister Donald Tusk for presenting an honest assessment of the situation, without promising a magical cure for the crisis. So far, we saw Tusk all in smiles, a prime minister for good times. Yesterday, we saw a leader, GAZETA WYBORCZA concludes.
The FAKT tabloid has an interview with the prominent analyst Jadwiga Staniszkis sounds a pessimistic note, claiming that the European Union is getting weaker and weaker at a time of crisis and, in the long run, it may collapse.

On the informal summit of NATO defense ministers in Krakow, POLSKA says that Poland should take the opportunity to lobby for a bigger say in the alliance as a country which, in the last decade, has proved to be one of its most active and reliable members.

RZECZPOSPOLITA sets the scene for a major promotion campaign on the city of Krakow which starts on CNN Television on Monday. A 30-second advert, titled ‘Krakow. The Great’ will be aired 139 times over a four-week period. A Krakow City official told the daily that last year Krakow attracted six million foreign visitors. The current campaign comes at the right time – when potential tourists are planning their holiday itinerary. It is estimated that the CNN Krakow campaign will reach some 150 million households.
