• IMF loan proves economy is sound
  • 15.04.2009

Dziennik writes that the Polish zloty is now a safer currency after the government announced that they would borrow 20 billion USD from the IMF to protect the currency against speculation attacks.

The paper writes that consumers can expect a far more stable zloty now. But, the more important development in yesterday’s decision making process, writes the daily, is that one of the world’s most important financial institutions stated that Poland’s economy is not awaiting catastrophic effects of the global economic crisis and the loan is simply meant to stabilize the constantly fluctuating currency.

Gazeta Wyborcza writes that it seems as though only five Polish cities will be nominated for hosting Euro2012 matches and the stadium in Chorzow, one of the most modern in Poland, is not among the choices.

The paper speculates that UEFA will choose five Polish cities and only three Ukrainian cities as Poland has better infrastructure and securer finances. The daily adds that Poznan will likely not host any matches, especially if UEFA President Michel Platini, wrapping up a visit in the Ukraine today and coming to Poland, is pleased with the progress of Ukraine’s Euro 2012 preparation.

The tabloid Fakt writes that, following the tragic fire in Kamien Pomorskie where at least 21 died, has given Polish politicians an opportunity to look decisive and concerned. It tragedy has, writes the daily, almost become a race amongst politicians, especially the Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Lech Kaczynski, to see who will react first – and has started a media circus in anticipation of the 2010 presidential elections.

The tabloid adds that, for the victims, who was first at the scene, who expresses condolences first or who promises aid first is not at all important. What is important, writes the paper, is that the aid arrives – and not only to those affected by this fire, but also to the countless others in Poland living in similar under-funded shelters that could burst into flames at a moment’s notice as well.
