Sir Elton John is billed tonight with an open-air concert at Warsaw’s Polonia Sports Stadium. It is a part of ‘Elton John's Rocket Man Greatest Hits Tour’.
He is to dedicate Candle in the Wind, his greatest hit and the best-selling single in pop music history, to the victims of the recent plane crash in which Polish President Lech Kaczyński, his wife and ninety four other persons were killed.
Composer, singer and pianist, Elton John is one of the legends of the world show business, with six Grammys to his credit. He has enjoyed an unabated popularity since the 1970s.
His previous appearance in Poland, at the Sopot Festival in September 2006, has ended in something of a scandal. Having received the event’s Golden Nightingale statuette for life-time achievement from Poland’s former president Lech Wałęsa, he publicly critisized Poland for what he termed as ‘recent aggression against gay people’ (a reference to the bans of gay pride marches).
