An international cultural festival focusing on the theme of freedom, both in a political and ethical aspect, has opened in Gdańsk.
The All About Freedom festival is being organized by the European Solidarity Centre and its director, Dominican Father Maciej Zięba, describes the event as a kind of dialogue on the experience of freedom, in relation to the individual and to societies.
“The language of film, theatre and music transcends all social, political and national divisions and can therefore help to present the different colours and aspects of freedom,” he said.
The film programme of the eleven-day event includes the Oscar-nominated Precious by Lee Daniels and Ken Loach’s Looking for Eric as well as many documentaries. There are also gigs by Caribou, a Canadian specializing in symphonic dream-pop, Britain’s Tim Exile playing electronic music and Polish groups Kamp and Fox Box.
Among the speakers in one of the debates is William Echikson, a veteran journalist, currently Google’s Senior Manager for Communications.
The fourth edition of the festival, this year’s All about Freedom marks the 30th anniversary of the formation of Solidarity. (mk)
