One of Poland’s greatest stage divas, singer Violetta Villas today celebrates her 72nd birthday today.

Her career as a singer, endowed with an amazing voice – a coloratura soprano spanning five octaves - has taken in opera, operetta, theatre, films, musicals and revues, both in Poland and abroad, including the Casino de Paris and stages in Las Vegas.

She sang with Frank Sinatra and Charles Aznavour. Considered one of the sex symbols of her era, she actually led a modest life, keeping away from scandal and in her later years turning to religion and animals.

After she retired from the stage Violetta Villas also made a failed attempt to turn her home into a shelter for strays. (ek)
