• Walesa installation on display in Swedish capital
  • 16.06.2010

An installation dedicated to former president Lech Wałęsa and the establishment of the Solidarity movement is on display at the Nobel Museum in Stockholm.

The work is meant to recall the past of the Nobel Peace Prize winner, a former electrician at the Gdańsk Shipyard – the cradle of the Solidarity trade union, which led to the fall of the communist regime in Poland in 1989.

Authored by Grzegorz Klaman, the installation depicts Wałęsa’s old metal work table breaking through the museum’s wall.

The object reminds us that “great history may be born in a humble place at a work table,” said a representative of the Gdansk Shipyard at the opening night of the display, citing Lech Wałęsa. The installation was prepared on the initiative of the Swedish museum, in collaboration with the Polish Institute in Stockholm, the Gdansk Shipyard and the Wyspa Institute of Art. (ab)
