The UK-based musical artist Boy George kicks off EuroPride2010 this weekend with a DJ set in Warsaw, the first-ever host Central European city to host a EuroPride.
The club M25 will host the event, sponsored by the EuroPride organizers as the kick-off party for the weekend’s events, which are to include many parties, lectures, debates, film screenings, culminating in a parade on Saturday, 17 July. The parade begins at 13:00 at Plac Bankowy and wraps up on the other side of Warsaw at Plac Konstytucji.
Boy George, born in 1961, has been playing music as part of the New Romantic movement, which emerged in the UK in the early 1980s. As an artist and public figure, Boy George is an androgynous icon, a look and lifestyle he made famous with the pop band Culture Club.
The EuroPride 2010 event is organized by the European Pride Organisers Association (EPOA), a network of European Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Pride organizations that work together to organize various marches, social and cultural events throughout the continent. This year marks the first time a central-eastern European city has hosted the event, which launched in London in 1992 and was last held in Zurich in 2009. (mmj)
