Macy Gray from the US and Marianne Faithful from the UK will take part in events in Gdansk marking the 30 anniversary of the August 1980 strikes and the birth of Solidarity, the first free trade union in the then communist bloc.
Both will sing for free, says Father Maciej Zieba, director of the European Solidarity Centre in Gdansk.
The anniversary events will be held in the Gdansk shipyard at the end of August with the participation of many top Polish artists, intellectuals and celebrities. Father Zieba appealed to Poles to wear Solidarity badges from this Saturday until the end of August.
“Let’s look for old Solidarity badges in our drawers and wear them to show that we are proud of the heritage of this magnificent movement and express solidarity with people who are persecuted”, Father Zieba said. (kk)
