The European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO) under Italy’s Gianandrea Noseda appears tonight in the central city of Lodz with their only concert in Poland.
The ensemble was formed in 1978 in London . It comprises 140 young musicians aged from 14-27 from all EU states. Among them are three Polish musicians , who competed with over four thousand talented European youth. Recruitment is done once a year and a musician plays in the orchestra for not more than three years.
EUYO plays in Europe, Asia and both Americas. It had a gala performance during the European day at the Shanghai Expo 2010.
The orchestra played under such renowned conductors as Claudio Abbado, who was its first music director, Sir Bernard Haitink, Sir Collin Davis, Daniel Barenboim and Leonard Bernstein. Among its soloists were Martha Argerich, Barbara Hendricks and Nigel Kennedy. At present the orchestra is headed by Vladimir Ashkenazy.
In Lodz EUYO will be playing Mieczyslaw Karlowicz’s „Bianca da Molena”, Prokofiev’s suite from the opera “Gambler” as well as Peter Tchaikovsky’s 6th Symphony Pathetique .
The concert is organized by the Lodz Philharmonic and the Adam Mickiewicz Institute. (ab)
