  • 14.09.2010

The authorities Majorca off the Spanish coast have made Fryderyk Chopin an honorary citizen of the island in a gesture to mark the bicentennial of the composer’s birth.

Chairwoman of the local government, Francina Armengol, said that Chopin was not only as a musical genius but also a man who appreciated the island’s natural beauty.

“It was a source of inspiration for Chopin in writing the cycle of 24 Preludes, here in Majorca,” she said.

The Polish composer stayed in the monastery complex in Valldemossa in Majorca during the winter of 1838-39, in the company of the French writer George Sand.

Valldemossa is the site of an annual Chopin Festival, held every year in August. (mk)
