Sting is billed at today’s opening ceremony of Poznań’s new football stadium to an audience of over 30,000.
He is to perform his greatest hits both from his time with The Police - Roxanne, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Every Breath You Take, and solo work - Fragile and If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, in an orchestral arrangement, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra conducted by Steven Mercurio.
The gig is part of the 78-concert tour promoting his new album Symphonicities, which began in Canada on 2 June.
This is Sting’s seventh visit to Poland. The first was in 1996 when he gave three concerts in Warsaw (1996, 2001, 2005), two in Katowice (1997, 2000) and one in Chorzów’s Sląski Stadium (2008)).
The stadium in Poznań is commissioned as the first of Poland’s four Euro 2012 venues. The remaining three are to open next year, the one in Gdańsk in April, the one in Warsaw in June and the Wrocław stadium in July. (mk)
