Polish film director Andrzej Wajda has received the Order of the Morning Star with the image of Marco Marulic, one of the highest Croatian state distinctions.

The ceremony was held at the residence of the Croatian Ambassador in Poland, Ivan Del Vechio, who said that the order is not only for Wajda’s outstanding cinematic achievements but also an expression of  gratitude for his support of Croatia, right from the start of its struggle for sovereignty.

Ivan Del Vechio described Wajda as “one of the greatest artists of world cinema”, recalling his fascination with the Polish director’s films.

He also said that Croatia’s state distinction is also a way of saying thank you for his public statements against the aggression of Croatia and his open  protest against the bombing of Croatian villages and towns in the summer of 1991.

During the Venice Festival in September 1991, Wajda signed a petition calling for an end to hostilities in the Balkans.

Chairman of the Croatian Film Directors Guild, Arsen Anton Ostojić, addressed  Wajda with the words: “You have left an indelible mark on world cinema and in Polish culture.” 

In an interview with the Polish Press Agency, Wajda said: “Poland is a country which has suffered a lot in its history and that is why it understands better than others what it means to be left alone. There was a time when Croatia was left alone in the face of outside violence. I have made many visits to Croatia and have many friends there.”

The Order of the Morning Star with the image of Marco Marulic, the Croatian Renaissance poet, is awarded to both Croatian nationals and foreigners for their services to the country. (mk)
