Polish Cinema Now! is the title of a book just published by the Warsaw-based Adam Mickiewicz Institute and John Libbey Publishing Ltd, consisting of eleven articles by mostly Polish critics on the latest trends in Polish cinematography.

 

The subject matter covered includes documentaries, animation, commercial cinema, educational films, movie on feminist and gay themes.

 

There is also an article by the British critic Michael Brooke entitled Resolving a Crisis of Identity: How Central-Eastern European Cinema Adjusted to the Changes of 1989

 

According to the John Libbey Publishing Ltd web site: “The book is meant for cinema-lovers, for whom the old Polish cinema of Wajda, Has, Munk, Skolimowski, Polański or Kieślowski means something important, and who would like to learn who are their students and successors in contemporary Poland.”

 

The publication is richly illustrated and accompanied by two DVDs with a selection of the most interesting short films of the last twenty years. (mk)
