Fidelio: The Holocaust Memorial Production is the title of an opera production currently touring Poland.

The opera’s libretto is based on Beethoven’s Fidelio but the action is transferred from a prison in 18th-century Spain to the Nazi Gewrman concentration camp of Auschwitz.

The production is a joint project of the Warsaw-based Beethoven Association and the Music Academy in Oslo.
Julia Pevzner of Israel is the director and Alexander Tsaljuk of Russia conducts the Orchestra of the Beethoven Academy of Kraków, the Polish Radio Choir and singers from Poland, Germany and Spain.

The tour opened in Wrocław on Monday. It continues in Lublin tonight, with further performances in Warsaw (28 November), Łódź (29 November) and Kraków (6 December). (mk)
