Karin Stanek

1960s pop legend Karin Stanek has died in a hospital in Germany, where she was being treated for pneumonia for the past three weeks. She was 68 years old.

Karin Stanek will be remembered as a volcano of energy, known for her sensational live performances.

Stanek was one of the symbols of the so-called ‘bigbeat’ music (which sounds, to the western ear, much like late 1950s/early 1960s rock and roll) which swept through the country in the 1960s, adored by an entire generation of young people.

Karin Stanek made her debut in 1962 with the song Jimmy Joe. After years of playing with top 1960s group Czerwono-Czarni, she launched a solo career, collaborating with several bands.

Her biggest hits include Chlopiec z Gitara (Boy With a Guitar), Jedziemy Autostopem (We’re Hitchhiking), and Wala Twist.

The artist moved to Germany in 1976, where she remained until her death.

Karin Stanek’s funeral ceremony will take place in Germany on Saturday; the family of the late artist expressed the wish for the location of the observance not to be disclosed in the media. (ab/pg)
