• Mickiewicz Museum set for revamp
  • 24.02.2011

The seat of Warsaw's Museum of Literature is set for a major revamp through a far-reaching programme co-financed by EU funds.

The museum, which is named in honour of Poland's most celebrated bard, Adam Mickiewicz, comprises of six listed houses in Warsaw's Old Town. Two of these are situated on the Old Town Square, whilst four more are on Brzozowa Street, which leads off the plaza.

Besides a thorough conversion and modernisation of the properties, the project includes plans to open up the ancient cellars, which have remained sealed since the Second World War. The Old Town was especially devastated during the war, and the houses were painstakingly rebuilt in the aftermath.

Currently, besides ten rooms devoted to Adam Mickiewicz, the museum also evokes the lives of other great Polish writers, including Julian Tuwim and Melchior Wankowicz.

According to museum director Henryk Banasiuk, the seat will be ready to reopen in 2016. (nh)
