The much talked about movie Sala samobojców (Suicide Room) opened today across Poland to largely enthusiastic reviews.

The film, by newcomer Jan Komasa, explores the darker recesses of cyberspace, as experienced by Polish teenagers today.

“Jan Komasa has shown that he is one of the most talented directors of the young generation,” wrote Katarzyna Nowakowska in Dziennik Gazeta Prawna.

Likewise, Pawel Felis of Gazeta Wyborcza hailed the movie as ‘a powerful and important debut.’

The Suicide Room follows the story of Dominik (Jakub Gierszal ) a popular high school kid who gets sucked into a a cyber veil of tears by a mysterious girl he meets online.

Minister of Culture Bogdan Zdrojewski is amongst those to have championed the film as an example of a new wave in Polish cinema.

Although many Polish critics salute director Komasa as a rising force, they have likewise said that film falls short of being a masterpiece. This view was echoed following a recent screening at the Berlin Film Festival.

“Director Komasa obviously has talent,”  wrote Alissa Simon in Variety, “but here seems to have bitten off more than he can chew.” (nh)
