The World according to Kieslowski is the motto of a wide range of events launched this weekend to mark the 70th anniversary of the birth and the 15th anniversary of the death of the famous Polish film director Krzysztof Kieslowski, who died on 13 March 1996, aged 54.


A multi-media exhibition on Kieslowski’s life and artistic career opens at the Museum of Cinematography in Lodz on Monday.

The exhibition is to feature the copies of scripts to The Decalogue series with the director’s hand-written notes, photographs, publications, festival trophies and the unique collection of posters by designers from Poland, Japan, Germany, Argentina, France, Finland, Denmark, Italy and the Czech Republic. Some of the exhibits come from the collection of the director’s widow, Maria Kieslowska.

The events include a retrospective of Kieslowski’s output.

Kieslowski was among the most influential Polish film makers. He is a graduate of the Film School in Lodz, to which he was admitted on his third attempt.

He achieved worldwide critical and popular success for The Double Life of Veronique, the Three Colours trilogy (Blue received the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival, White – the Silver Bear in Berlin and Red – an Oscar nomination, a BAFTA Award and the French Cesar Award) and The Decalogue, which has been sold to 75 countries.
