An audience of around 1, 000 is expected to attend tonight’s concert in Katowice of Woody Allen and his New Orleans Jazz Band, in which the  famous film director plays the clarinet.

The event is one of the highlights of the city’ s promotion in its race for the title of the European Capital of Culture in 2016.

Allen and his six-strong group, with Eddy David (banjo), Conal Fowkes (piano), Simon Wettenhall (trumpet), Jerry Zigmont (trombone), John Gill (percussion) and Greg Cohen (double-bass), arrive in Katowice in the afternoon hours and leave shortly after the concert.  Such a schedule is described by some as a disappointment for the organizers who have prepared a list of sightseeing attractions for the visitors.

A retrospective review of Woody Allen’s cinema output is currently under way in Katowice with 36 films on the programme.

Woody Allen’s only previous visit to Poland was in December 2008, for a concert in Warsaw’s Congress Hall.  (mk)
