• Wyclef Jean to play Polish solstice extravaganza
  • 24.03.2011
Legendary beatmeister Wyclef Jean of Fugees fame has been announced as the headline act of Krakow's time-honoured 'Wianki' celebrations.

The Haitian-born hip hop star, who was allegedly clipped by a bullet last week whilst canvassing in his home country's presidential elections, is due to perform in Krakow on 25 June.

As tradition dictates, the free concert will take place on the river-front at the foot of Krakow's Royal Castle. The gig follows the ancient ceremony of setting candle-lit wreaths (wianki) afloat on the river, an echo of a pagan rite.

'For four years now, we have been trying to consequently build up the image of Wianki,' said Izabella Helbin of the Krakow Festival Office.

Headliners over the last few years have included Lenny Kravitz, Jamiroquai and 80s throwbacks Bananarama.

As always, top Polish acts will be providing back-up for the big name at the top of the bill. This year, Pablopavo, Marika, SOFA and the Poise Rite are all signed up. (nh)
