Former Pop Idol winner Monika Brodka won three statuettes and thrash metal dinosaurs Acid Drinkers (pictured) picked up four awards last night at the Fryderyki 2011 ceremony in Warsaw.

The 24 year-old Monika Brodka, originally nominated for nine awards, won statuettes for Best Female Vocalist, Pop Album of the Year and Music Production of the Year for her Granda album (with Bartek Dziedzic and Marcin Gajko).

The awards affirm Brodka as a major pop artist in Poland after winning the Polish version of Pop Idol in 2004. Granda is her third album, which confirms an artist of originality and proves she is more than just the product of the reality TV pop factory.

While Brodka is the new face of Polish pop music, Acid Drinkers, formed in Poznan back in 1986, are the increasingly wrinkled face of Polish rock music of old. Their Fishdick Zwei – The Dick Is Rising Again album has seen a resurgence in their popularity of late, however, and the band picked up four awards at what is regarded as the Polish equivalent to the American Grammys.

Acid Drinkers were awarded statuettes for Group of the Year, Song of the Year (Love Shack), Metal Album of the Year and Best Graphic Album.

Kuba Badach won Male Vocalist of the Year while Tres B won Best Debut.

The president of Warsaw, Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to Wojciech Mlynarski (b. 1941) who has been making records since 1967 and is known for his ballads and poetic lyrics.

The Most Disappointed Musician of the Year Award however must go to instrumentalist Czeslaw Mozil, who, despite being nominated for seven awards went home with none. (pg)
