This novel by one of Poland's best known writers, the late Witold Gombrowicz, is not quite what the title suggests.

It's the story of a couple of blase middle aged men who manipulate a young couple, whose emotions are laid bare. Witold Gombrowicz is one of the most widely read Polish artists, whose work was originally regarded as scandalous. Books like 'Ferdydurke', which is about the masks people put on, or a forced by others to wear, and plays such as 'Trans-Atlantyk', have become classics. Gombrowicz spent much of his life in exile in Latin America. He never returned to communist Poland. His diaries were banned under communism, but met with acclain in newly democratic Poland.

Pornography was recently made into a successful movie by Jan Jakub Kolski (2003) and has just been . released on DVD.
