Lech Wałęsa showing the “V” sign, Lech Wałęsa hugging Nicolas Sarkozy, Lech Wałęsa wiping a tear – pictures from the celebrations in Gdańsk of the 25th Nobel Peace Prize anniversary take chief place on the front pages of the dailies. RZECZPOSPOLITA adds a picture of Nicolas Sarkozy and Polish PM Tusk, writing that the meeting in Gdańsk, attended by European leaders and Nobel laureates, was also devoted to discussions on the EU climate and energy package. “No breakthrough, but the French proposals are close to Polish expectations,” writes the daily under a heading of “Warm talks on climate”.

DZIENNIK daily reports that the Education Ministry is thinking to replace school bags with lockers, because the average bag of books carried by youngsters can weigh more than 10 kilogrammes. Health authorities have been raising the alarm for years, warning that because of the weight, school bags are dangerous. Seventy-two percent say drunk drivers should have their licence confiscated, 46% are in favour of heavy fines, and 28% say the car should be confiscated. So how come we have hordes of drunk drivers on the roads? - asks the paper, adding that over 10 months this year police detained 140,000 drivers under the influence of alcohol. Paradoxically, the same people who are in favour of harsher penalizing will drink and drive themselves. And only 50% of respondents said they would try to stop someone who was intoxicated driving.

Lastly tabloid SUPEREXPRESS which publishes a picture of a young couple with the title: “Honest Varsovians” and the story of how the two found a bag of money (75,000 zloty) and searched for the owner, first through a lost and found office, then through the police. As it happened, at the police station they met a man who came to report the loss of… a bag of money. The man, a Warsaw building contractor, had been mugged at a parking lot and robbed of the December wages for his staff. It was the mugger who must have lost the neatly packed banknotes. The couple say that they knew somebody would miss the money, especially before Christmas. The building contractor meanwhile intends to present the two honest Varsovians with a considerable Christmas bonus…
