“Never have so many owed so much to so few,” said President Bronislaw Komorowski after a meeting Friday with the leaders of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Aid, one Poland’s largest charities.

"We are host today to an extraordinary group of people. [...] Never before have so many owed so much to so few. For this, we thank you," President Komorowski said after talks at the Presidential Palace with the charity’s founder Jerzy Owsiak.

"We are pleased that we could talk about volunteerism and building civil society in Poland. We are pleased that as a foundation we have created something that is respected around the world," said Jerzy Owsiak.

On 2 March the foundation celebrated its 18th year in existence. In that time it has raised the equivalent of 110 million USD, which has been spent on medical equipment and other projects for children.

In January this year, Poland’s single biggest one-day charity fund raiser received 37 million zloty (just under 10 million euros) for children with kidney disease.

President Komorowski pledged that he would again be patron of the charity for next year’s fund raiser. (pg)
