• Deputy PM calls for nuclear rethink
  • 17.03.2011
Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister, Waldemar Pawlak has said that Poland should reconsider some of its privatisation plans in the energy sector following the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster in Japan.

Speaking at a press conference in Warsaw on Thursday, Pawlak criticised a plan to sell the Enea electric energy distributor to a French state-owned company.

“It is as if Austria decided to sell its entire energy sector to France. Such would be the consequences here. The Treasury Minister should calmly reconsider this plan,” Mr Pawlak said.

Commenting on the explosion in the Fukushima plant following a massive tsunami, the vice premier observed that “this is a lesson for us to choose solutions that are very safe but also opt for solutions basing on domestic raw materials.”

Poland has reaffirmed its determination to build nuclear power plants despite growing concern over this source of energy. Construction of the first plant is to begin in 2016. Its site is to be chosen within the next two years. (kk/jb)
