A construction worker at the National Stadium in Warsaw has died after he fell off a scaffold and plunged 30 metres while assembling the stadium’s giant glass roof structure.

“A committee is looking into the circumstances surrounding the accident,” construction site spokeswoman Katarzyna Szydlowska told journalists, adding that “according to our information, the man worked for Mostostal, which is responsible for the roof construction.”

Not the first, not the last?

This is the third such fatal accident at the National Stadium in Warsaw, which currently under construction ahead of the Euro 2012 football championships next year.

In late 2009, two workers were killed after a lift carrying them fell from a height of 18 metres.
At the time, the National Labour Inspectorate found that a quickened pace of construction work caused serious irregularities and cutting corners as far as safety was concerned, with a number of penalties incurred as a result. (jb)
