Poland’s richest man Jan Kulczyk is testifying before the special parliamentary commission called to investigate the corruption scandal involving the Polish oil giant PKN Orlen. Jan Kulczyk , whose fortune is estimated at 3 billion euros, was called to explain among others , his meeting in Vienna in July 2003 with the ex-KGB agent Vladimir Alganov now responsible for the energy sector in Russia. Kulczyk, who was called to testify in October but failed to appear due to frail health condition, presented a statement to the commission in which he pointed that his meeting with Alganov was devoted only to possible energy exports from Russia. Kulczyk reminded of his large input into Poland’s economy stressing he is the founder of one of the largest capital groups in Poland the Kulczyk Holding, though he underlined that for over ten years now he is not a member of a supervisory board of any of the companies, his role is the strategic planning and acquiring contacts. He denied the allegations of his contact with the Russian ex agent aiming at privatising the oil sector in Poland. The special commission has been called after the spectacular arrest of PKN Orlen chairman following evidence of fraud and alleged involvement of top Polish political and business personalities in the privatising of the petroleum group.
