- Coalition talks stumble again
- 26.10.2005
Chances for the talks to form a coalition government in Poland are becoming slimmer. The would-be partners, Law and Justice which won the September election, and the Civic Platform, the second biggest party in parliament, failed to reach agreement on who should hold the post of the parliamentary speaker. Each came up with its own candidate. Law and Justice, or PiS, proposed Marek Jurek, while Civic Platfirm, or PO, did not withdraw its candidate Bronislaw Komorowski, whom PiS did not accept.
Presenting its candidate PiS said it was a result of the stand taken by the Civic Platform, which had failed to reply positively to its successive proposals.
PO, on its part, argued that the parliamentary speaker should be someone from among its ranks. Its leader Donald Tusk said that if Marek Jurek is elected speaker, the field of manoeuvre in the coalition talks would be considerably limited. He did not says, however, if that would mean the end of talks between PiS and PO on forming a coalition government.
The parliament again adjourned its meeting. It will re-convene at 10 minutes past 2 to elect its speaker.
