A dramatic last minute appeal has been made for the release of the kidnapped Polish engineer in Pakistan before the Taliban deadline runs out today.

The mother of the 13 year old child of Piotr Stanczak, who was kidnapped in Pakistan last September, has appealed to the Polish authorities to act before the deadline given by the Pakistani Taliban, who have threatening to kill the Polish engineer if their demands are not met.

“He is a Polish citizen. It doesn’t matter where he is, the government should do its best to help him,” the ex-partner of engineer Stanczak said on private radio.

Last week the kidnappers of Stanczak - from the Tehrik-e-Taleban - announced that they will kill him if the Pakistani government fails to fulfil their demands including the release of members of the Taliban from jail.

After the Foreign office in Warsaw released no further details, Stanczak’s former partner decided to speak publicly for the first time since the kidnap.

“This is an act of desperation by me and my child. Please, do whatever it takes to get him relased,” said Dorota Bartula. “I promised my son I would do everything in my power to free his father,” she added.

Stanczak’s son carefully follows all information coming from Pakistan.

The Polish engineer was working for the Geofizyka Krakow when he was abducted by armed assailants on September 28, some 200 km south-east of Islamabad. Three Pakistanis, a driver and two bodyguards, who accompanied the Polish engineer were shot dead during the kidnap.

The kidnappers are also holding the head of the local branch of a specialized agency of the UN, the American John Solecki, who was captured in similar circumstances to the Polish engineer.
