Romanian President Traian Basescu is paying a visit to Warsaw at President Lech Kaczynski’s invitation to honour the 90th anniversary of Polish-Romanian relations.
The visit of President Basescu provides a chance to evaluate co-operation and open a new chapter of the bilateral affairs, particularly in the light of Romania’s membership of the European Union.
In the morning meeting the main topic of the talks between the heads of states was Polish-Romanian strategic co-operation, the effects of the financial crisis on eastern Europe, security policies and the co-operation between the countries within the EU.
In the afternoon Traian Basescu will meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk and with Speakers of the Polish Seim and Senate, the lower and upper houses of parliament.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in February 1919, shortly after Poland regained independence. In 2007, Lech Kaczynski paid an official visit to Bucharest. (pg)
