Members of the Polish branch of the international organization Free Tibet have sent a letter of appeal to President Lech Kaczynski asking him to intervene with the authorities of the Chinese People’s Republic in regards to Tibet.
The group sent the appeal to coordinate with the 50th anniversary of the struggle by the Tibetan people to secure sovereignty for their nation from China which started on 10 March 1959.
The leader of Tibet, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, spent a week in Poland in December as an honoured guest of several Polish cities. He spoke to a large audience in Warsaw, thanking Poles for the solidarity they have showed with his people and for their example of nonviolent struggle through the Solidarity movement of the 1980s.
The group has organized various actions in 25 cities all over the country, including Warsaw, where they roped off a large area at the Free Tibet Roundabout, at the crossings of Prymas Tysiaclecia Avenue and Kasprzaka Street, calling it the ‘occupied zone’ to represent the Chinese ‘occupation’ of Tibet.
