The Polish chocolate maker Terravita has warned that investing in Belarus may leave a bad taste in the mouth

The company has issued a statement claiming that Belarusian authorities will not provide any sort of insurance for foreign investors.

“Terravita […] warns citizens of Poland and Polish institutions potentially interested in investing in Belarus to be prudent when deciding to make any sort of investments in the economy there,” stated a press release from the firm.

The chocolate maker was one of the largest Polish investors in its eastern neighbour’s economy, having attempted to open a chocolate factory in Minks with investments of over one million USD. The firm only found out after the money was paid out that the contracts were based on false documentation.

“Filing a lawsuit against Belarusian citizens who caused our losses has proved to be pointless,” added the company.

The company, realizing it is fruitless to seek justice, has decided to appeal to other Polish firms to warn them against investing in Belarus

At the end of February, Deputy Prime Minister Waldemar Pawlak met with the PM of Belarus, Sergey Sidorski and his deputy Andrey Kobiakov. The main topic of the meeting was increasing trade cooperation between the two countries. (mmj/pg)
