Poland celebrates Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day, Monday, with Hungary’s president Laszlo Solyom is Warsaw for meetings with high level politicians.

At 10.30 am the Hungarian president is to meet with his Polish opposite number, Lech Kaczynski.

Istvan Gordon, head of the Hungarian Culture Institute, told Polish Radio that a day of friendship between the two nations is needed, as there are many supporters of strengthening bilateral relations in two countries.

According to Gordon, the friendship between Poland and Hungary could be enlivened by initiating more cultural events, especially in the field of literature or music.

Gordon believes also that in the international arena the two countries could cooperate more and they could undertake more joint actions within the EU.

March 23 was acknowledged Polish-Hungarian Friendship Day by the Polish parliament in 2007. In a special resolution MPs reminded of the strong historical bonds between the two countries. A similar resolution was passed by the Hungarian National Assembly. (jm)
