Poland’s Ministry of Defence has refused to comment on the suggestion made by officer at the US Air Force Chief of Staff that NATO F-16s now stationed at Aviano Air Base, Italy, should relocate to Poland.

Lt. Col. Chris Sage, first presented his idea last month in Stars and Stripes, the official newspaper of the US armed forces.

“It is in the national interest of the United States to continue to transform USAFE by relocating U.S. F-16s currently in Italy to new bases in Poland," he writes in a report on "Transforming United States Air Forces in Europe and Empowering Poland.”

“I have nothing to say on that matter,” spokesman for the ministry Robert Rochowicz told Polska daily. US Gen. Craig Franklin, commander of the 31st Fighter Wing at Aviano also refused to comment.

There are currently 5400 US citizens living in Aviano. (jm)
