• Miner dies in quake in Rudna colliery

A 30-year-old miner died and three others were injured in a powerful earth movement in the Rudna copper mine in Polkowice, south western Poland, Wednesday morning.

 

The State Mining Authority informs that the incident occurred at 1.03 am, some 1100 metres below the ground level.

 

The dead miner leaves behind a wife and three children.

 

The injured were transported to the hospital. One of them has already returned home, and the remaining two miners are still under doctors’ supervision. The most serious injury is broken ribs.

 

Currently a team of specialists is working in the scene of the accident at the mine owned by KGHM Polska with losses are still being evaluated.

 

Seismic events have been recorded often at the copper mine in Upper Silesia. At least 3 people were injured, equipment damaged and several tunnels collapsed at the Rudna mine in 2002 causing minor damage to buildings at Polkowice.
