• Springtime snowfalls throughout Poland
  • 25.03.2009

Poland has seen the return of winter as snow fell throughout the whole country overnight and nearly broke a record amount of snowfall on Kasprowy Wierch, one of the country’s highest peaks in the Tatra mountains.

The Polish-Slovenian border mountain now boasts 322 cm of snow on the summit, almost breaking the 355 cm record set in 1995.

Snow did not only fall in the Tatra mountain range, however, but throughout the country. A heavy goods vehicle ran into a bus on State Highway Nr 5 between Poznan and Bydgosz, western Poland.

The HGV driver maintains that he was driving not faster than 30 km/hr due to poor road conditions.

“I was driving around 30 km/hr because I could not go faster. All of a sudden, the truck hit ice and went into the left side of a bus,” stated the driver.

Three people were injured – the driver and two passengers of the bus – according to police who have diverted drivers to another highway since local roads are covered in snow.

Meteorologists are predicting that temperatures throughout the country will fall below zero this afternoon and snow will continue to fall throughout the day. (mmj)
