• Referee shortage in Poland after another arrest
  • 02.04.2009

Poland’s Central Anticorruption Bureau has arrested the 198th person in connection with a widespread football corruption scandal.

Piotr Sz., a referee form Silesia, southern Poland, was detained at his apartment in Zawiercie earlier this morning. According to unofficial information he is suspected of fixing matches in the third division.

The investigation into the match fixing affair in Poland has been underway since May 2005. So far the charges were levelled against referees, footballers and sports officials, including members of the Board of the Polish Football Association (PZPN) Wit Ż. and Kazimierz F.

The increasing number of arrested football referees could mean problems with finding sufficiently qualified people to officiate matches in Poland. The Polish Referees Association is even thinking about importing referees from abroad. (jm/pg)
