• UPDATE: Parliament rejects second draft on state financing political parties
  • 03.04.2009

The Lower House of Parliament, the Sejm, has rejected a draft by the leftist Democratic Left Alliance, aiming to reduce the amount of money received by parties from the state budget.

The SLD proposed to limit the money for political parities by half – in the case of richer parties – or by eleven percent – in case of poorer political groups.

The draft bill was rejected by 219 deputies and supported by 209 deputies.

Yesterday, after a stormy debate, parliament also rejected a rival draft by the ruling Civic Platform, aiming to suspend the financing of parties from the state budget for two years, due to the economic crisis.

204 deputies voted for the Civic Platform draft bill with 221 against. (mg/pg)
