On the anniversary of the signing of the Round Table agreement on April 5, 1989, the Presidential Palace in Warsaw has opened its doors and is displaying the actual table the talks took place at.

The Round Table talks lasted from February 6 to April 5 after the communist Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR) gave the go ahead for the talks in January. Later, the Solidarity candidates would win a landslide in partially free elections in June, bringing an end to the dictatorial system in place since WW II.

In August, Tadeusz Mazowiecki was elected prime minister by the Solidarity coalition in the Sejm, the lower house of parliament. (pg)
