• Thatcher to receive honorary doctorate in Poland
  • 21.04.2009

Former British prime minister, Margaret Thatcher,is to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Lodz, central Poland.

A decision has been taken by the University Senate though the date of the ceremony is yet to be fixed.

Margaret Thatcher was the longest serving British prime minister in the twentieth century, serving in the post  from 1979 to 1990. Known as the ‘Iron Lady’, she was the architect of strict reforms which took Britain out of the deep economic crisis and she still remains a controversial figure in the UK. In Poland, however, she was seen, alongside Ronald Reagan, a Cold War warrior and supporter of the battle to bring down communism.

Thatcher has been ill for sometime and makes infrequent public appearances, so it is doubtful she will be able to attend any ceremony that will take place in Lodz University. (pg/mk)
