• Polish and British kids most unhappy in Europe
  • 22.04.2009

Poland and Britain are one of the worst countries to bring up children in, claim scientists from the University of York in the UK.

The scientists conducted a survey on youngsters’ wellbeing in 29 European countries and that the best-off children those whose parents are Dutch and Scandinavians.

Poland came 20th in the wellbeing table and Great Britain 24th. Only children in Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania and Malta fared worse.

Poland came almost top of the child wellbeing table when it comes to education and health care (infant mortality, obesity, physical activity etc.). In both these categories Great Britain came almost bottom. But, on the other hand, children in Britain feel happier than Polish kids.

The research commissioned by the Child Poverty Action Group, and based on data from 2006, drew on 43 separate indicators affecting children, including health, poverty, education, behaviour, relationships and how children felt about their lives. (mg/pg)
