• Peter Fuss Achtung exhibition vandalised
  • 23.04.2009
An exhibition by controversial Polish artist Peter Fuss entitled  “Achtung!” has been vandalized, just half an hour after opening in a gallery in Prague, Czech Republic.

His super-size photos, reaching from the floor to ceiling, show Wermacht soldiers with a Star of David on their sleeves. The original photos had been taken from Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and Roman Polanski’s The Pianist, and then digitally edited. Peter Fuss claims that it draws a parallel between the Second World War and the current Israeli – Palestinian conflict.

About thirty minutes after the opening of the exhibition, a group of unknown activists wore it down, as they considered it to be anti-Semitic.

The head of Jewish community in the Czech Republic, Frantisek Banvai told the Czech daily Lidove noviny, that he sees Fuss’ photos as a clear provocation. “Especially, as it opened on Holocaust Memorial Day, Yom Hashoah,” he said.

Peter Fuss is a code name of Polish performer, known for his controversial works. He often makes use of illegal fly posting on billboards to make a comment on politics and social issues and especially likes to tackle issues seen as taboo. (jg/pg)
