A coffin with the body of Piotr Stanczak, beheaded by the Taliban in Pakistan last February, has arrived back in Poland.
A guard of honor welcomed the coffin, Wednesday morning, at Warsaw’s military airport.
A delegation from Pakistan, including the Foreign Ministry’s Secretary of State accompanied the casket.
”On behalf of the president, prime minister and Pakistani government, as well as our whole nation, I would like to offer our condolences for the brutal murder of Piotr Stanczak,” said Khan Nawabzada Malik Amad.
Stanczak’s family and those from from his workplace at the Geofizyka Krakow company in Krakow also took part in the ceremony.
Andrzej Kremer, Poland’s Deputy Foreign Minister, has declared that a report on events surrounding the case will be released in a few days time.
Before the body will be given to the family for burial, it has to be examined by doctors, who will finally determine the cause of death.
Piotr Stanczak was a Polish engineer kidnapped by the Taliban in the north west of Pakistan in September last year. In exchange for his freedom, the insurgents demanded the release of their comrades from Pakistani jails. By February the Taliban announced that the engineer had been murdered, released a video to prove the fact, but hung on to the body, making more demands.
Finally a deal was made with the authorities in Islamabad and the Taliban released the body last weekend.
Pakistan’s Interior minister, Rehman Malik, said Tuesday that security has been stepped up for foreigners working in Pakistan, particularly those in development areas. “We have assured Poland that their workers will be provided more security and they should continue their work for the development of Pakistan," he said and assured that Stanczak’s killers would be soon brought to justice.
