• Leo stays as Poland’s coach
  • 06.05.2009

Poland’s national coach Leo Beenhakker will remain on his position following a meeting with the Polish FA (PZPN) this morning.

Beenhakker met with the Polish FA and submitted a report on Poland’s progress on qualifying for the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa.

Afterwards, PZPN’s president, Grzegorz Lato, said that cooperation between the association and the coach is “excellent” and Beenhakker’s position is not threatened.

Press reports speculated before hand that this could be Beenhakker’s last day in the job following the Polish FA’s displeasure at the Dutchman’s involvement as a consultant for Feyenoord, a club he has previously managed.

Leo Beenhakker called the meeting with Lato “a pleasure”, as it was devoted to talking about Polish football. Those who were writing about his possible dismissal “have a vivid imagination”, the coach said.

The meeting was supposed to take place several days ago, but PZPN sent an invitation to Beenhakker too late and he already had a meeting with Guus Hiddink, manager of both the Russian national team and the English Premier League club Chelsea.

“I have had enough of this crap. I only advise Feyenoord when I have

free time,” Beenkhakker had said before today’s meeting, after accusations surfaced that his meetings with the Dutch club show a conflict of interest with his role with Poland’s national side.

“I have one job: I am head of the Polish team and I am completely

obsessed with advancing to the [2010 FIFA] World Cup in South Africa,” the Dutchman told the daily Dziennik. (jg/pg)
