Kornel Morawiecki (69) is head of Fighting Solidarity, founded during Martial Law in 1982 as a splinter group of the Solidarity trade union.

He finished his masters degree in 1963 at Wroclaw University, and received his doctorate in 1970 in quantum field theory. He taught mathematics at Wroclaw University of Technology until 2009.

In 1990 he announced his campaign for the presidency, but failed to receive the 100,000 signatures needed to run formally as a candidate. He has been a parliamentary candidate, both to the lower house and the Senate.

Morawiecki took part in the student riots of 1968, and was a member of the Solidarity trade union.

Following the imposition of Martial Law in 1981, he went into hiding, publishing samizdat pamphlets and bulletins. Months later he co-founded Fighting Solidarity, which advocated a free Poland.

He is married with five children.
