Marek Jurek

Marek Jurek (49) is head of the Christian conservative Polish Right, a splinter group founded in 2007 by five defecting parliamentarians from Law and Justice.

He gained his masters in history at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan, western Poland. He was actively involved in the opposition movement in the 1970s and 80s.

Marek Jurek was four times elected to Parliament, and was Parliamentary Speaker between 2005-2007. He was also a member of the National Broadcasting Council between 1995-2001.

He broke off from Law and Justice and stepped down from being Parliamentary Speaker after an amendment to the constitution over the protection of prenatal life was rejected.

In 2009 he was awarded the Order of Polonia Restituta for services to the freedom of Poland. He lives with his wife and three children in Piaseczno, a suburb of Warsaw.
