The number of Poles supporting the introduction of the common European currency in Poland has increased considerably with a high percentage still opting for a referendum on the issue - shows the latest opinion poll.

According to a poll by GfK Polonia, 65 percent of Poles are currently in favour of adopting the euro, up 11 percent from only six months ago. Some 70 percent believe that the matter should be decided in a national referendum. Also, 59 percent of those questioned believe that the introduction of the euro in Poland will have positive effects for the country.

In June 2008 this opinion was shared only by 36 percent of respondents. Analysts claim such a shift of opinion may be caused by the view that Poland could avoid a financial crisis by being in the eurozone. Such views seem to be shared by Varsovians that our reporter talked to.
